The Smog Filter
Now that AAP is elected in Punjab and MCD, the sole responsibility for the smog problem in Delhi is on Mr.Kejriwal and his government. Banning crackers on Diwali but not on New Year and Christmas says a lot about their political ideologies. According to an article posted in The Hindu, there had been 'no impact' of the firecrackers on the air quality of Delhi, but I beg to differ as it would have had a little impact to some extent.
I want to ask Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Bhagwant Mann, by banning crackers and not stubble burning, how did the Delhiites and Punjabis benefit? The children crying as they couldn't get the childhood joy of burning crackers, the shop owners not being able to make a living, and, of course, little difference for the Delhiites in the air quality.
Being in power for around 8months, the Punjab government still couldn't implement or even introduce schemes or policies in its State Assembly that would reduce stubble burning. Stubble burning is not the sole cause of this doom in Delhi. The slum dwellers and the poor rely on bonfires as their only source of heat and cooking. Not only that, people leave the bonfires burning and smoking rather than extinguishing them.
Mr. Kejriwal promised 300 units of 'free' electricity, but its benefit would only be derived when the unprivileged people are provided heaters and other electric heating gadgets. It would significantly reduce burning rubber, plastics, and other major polluting items to heat oneself.
The Punjab government should also devise incentives for farmers to avoid stubble burning, buying stubble from farmers at a low price and selling it to fertilizer manufacturers at a minimal profit. In addition, the government should spread awareness and information about the ill effects of stubble burning and provide information about how farmers can use stubble in khatiyas and as cattle feed.
